Job Description
An established maritime organisation is looking to appoint an experienced Technical Superintendent to oversee the technical management of assigned chemical tanker vessels. This role is responsible for ensuring that vessels are operated safely, efficiently, and in a cost-effective manner while maintaining high standards of reliability, compliance, and performance.
Working closely with internal stakeholders, shipyards, contractors, and other external partners, the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the smooth technical operation of the fleet. The position requires a hands-on and commercially aware technical professional who is able to manage vessel performance, maintenance planning, repair activities, and dry-docking projects effectively.
The ideal candidate will have at least 1 to 3 years of shore-based experience as a Technical Superintendent managing oil and/or chemical tankers. Previous seagoing experience on tanker vessels, particularly chemical tankers, will be highly advantageous.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day technical operations of assigned vessels to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient performance.
- Monitor vessel condition, machinery performance, and maintenance activities, following up on technical matters with ship managers and relevant stakeholders.
- Coordinate repairs, maintenance schedules, and spare parts planning to minimise downtime and support operational continuity.
- Assist in the preparation and control of technical budgets, including routine operating expenses, dry-docking costs, and major repair expenditure.
- Review technical reports, maintenance records, and machinery performance trends to support long-term asset reliability and maintenance planning.
- Monitor fuel and lubricant analysis, machinery efficiency, and vessel technical performance to identify areas for improvement.
- Ensure that all Class, Flag State, and statutory survey requirements are tracked closely and that deficiencies are rectified in a timely manner.
- Support investigations into technical incidents, machinery failures, and accident reports together with internal teams and external parties where required.
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise dry-dockings, major repairs, and vessel modifications to ensure projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
- Attend vessel visits, condition inspections, and shipyard projects, and follow up on findings with ship managers and service providers.
- Maintain close communication with internal stakeholders and external partners to ensure technical matters are handled effectively and commercially.
- Keep up to date with changes in maritime regulations, industry standards, and best practices to support compliance and continuous improvement.
- Contribute to technical discussions relating to crew competency, operational best practices, and technical briefings where necessary.
Requirements
- Degree in Marine Engineering or a related discipline.
- Class 1 Marine Engineer (Motor) Certificate of Competency or equivalent will be preferred.
- At least 1 to 3 years of shore-based experience as a Technical Superintendent.
- Prior sailing experience on tanker vessels, ideally chemical tankers, will be an advantage.
- Strong technical knowledge of ship machinery, planned maintenance, repair management, and dry-docking processes.
- Good understanding of international maritime regulations, Class and Flag requirements, and statutory compliance.
- Familiarity with technical budgeting, cost control, repair planning, and troubleshooting of vessel machinery and systems.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically competent and proactive maritime professional to join a dynamic organisation and take ownership of the technical performance of a modern tanker fleet.
