Technical Superintendent

Job Description

The Technical Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant technical and operational management of assigned vessels. The role provides technical guidance to vessel crews, ensures compliance with statutory and company requirements, monitors vessel performance, and supports the vessels in achieving operational, safety, and commercial objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as the primary technical point of contact for assigned vessels and provide technical and operational support to the Master and crew.
• Monitor vessel operations and ensure all activities are carried out safely and in compliance with applicable regulations, company policies, SMS requirements, and industry best practices.
• Ensure compliance with Flag State, Port State, Class, statutory, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
• Monitor the maintenance, condition, and seaworthiness of assigned vessels and ensure defects and technical issues are addressed promptly.
• Plan and monitor maintenance, repairs, surveys, inspections, dry-docking, and other technical activities.
• Work closely with Operations, Procurement, Crewing, shipyards, Class, Flag State, and other relevant stakeholders.
• Monitor vessel technical performance, safety performance, and key performance indicators.
• Manage and monitor technical expenditure and vessel budgets, providing timely reports and analysis to management and vessel owners as required.
• Support the implementation and continuous improvement of safety, environmental, and technical standards onboard.
• Provide direction, coaching, guidance, and mentoring to senior officers and vessel crew to support safe and effective operations and professional development.
• Monitor and review the performance of vessels and seafarers, identifying areas for improvement and ensuring appropriate follow-up actions.
• Maintain accurate technical records, reports, documentation, and correspondence relating to assigned vessels.
• Participate in emergency response activities and provide technical support when required.
• Act as a representative of the vessel owner/management company when dealing with external stakeholders and service providers.
• Carry out additional technical and operational responsibilities as assigned by the Fleet Manager or senior management.

Requirements

• Engineer Officer qualification with a First Class Chief Engineer Motor License from an IMO White List country, or
• Degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Minimum 2 years of sailing experience as a Senior Engineer, such as Second Engineer or Chief Engineer, onboard commercial vessels, or
• Minimum 2 years of shore-based experience as a Technical Superintendent, Fleet Manager, or in a similar technical management position within the maritime industry.

Knowledge & Skills

• Good knowledge of applicable marine regulations and statutory requirements.
• Good understanding of ISM, ISPS, MLC, and other relevant maritime regulations and industry standards.
• Strong knowledge of safe and efficient shipboard operations.
• Understanding of ship repair, maintenance, and technical services available at ports and shipyards worldwide.
• Strong safety and compliance mindset.
• Good command of written and spoken English.
• Ability to prepare and understand technical correspondence, reports, and documentation.
• Strong leadership, communication, coaching, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to provide clear and concise instructions, particularly during emergency or casualty situations.
• Ability to assess developing situations and make appropriate recommendations or notifications to senior management, owners, charterers, or other relevant parties.
• Good computer literacy and ability to work with maritime management systems.
• Knowledge and experience with computerized planned maintenance systems (PMS).
• Ability to manage multiple technical matters while maintaining focus on safety, compliance, vessel performance, and operational requirements.
