Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all cargo handling / stowage related enquiries are responded to as they arise as part of day-to-day activity within the office.
  • Encompasses all matters relating to verifying stowage proposals, to ensure that safe parameters are met at all stages of the voyage.
  • Prepare supporting calculations in the office and / or assisting Masters, operators and Port Captains to verify their stow plans using engineering calculation principals.
  • Strive to achieve the most cost-effective solutions, taking account of all the elements – including cargo care, productivity, cost and safety.
  • Prepare lifting calculations and method statements, including lifting equipment requirements, for project cargo or other contract tenders as may be required. He will take responsibility for communicating out such plans and for ensuring that they are understood by those who will implement them.
  • Prepare detailed lashing plans with supporting calculations for lashing / securing as may be required.
  • Provide the principle day-to-day link between local ops staff and the regional or head office for all issues relating to the need for further engineering stowage and cargo handling calculations that require approval from vessel owners or managers.
  • Provide professional support and follow-up on these matters to local operational staff, (eg Port Captains) providing guidance and direction on methods and company procedures, raising issues as appropriate with Operations management for discussion and /or approval as may be necessary.
  • Propose designs for cargo handling equipment to improve safe handling and/or increase productivity.

Requirement:

  • Professional qualification in engineering that encompasses structural strength, static and dynamic forces. Naval architecture depending on specific experience in a similar role.
  • Preferably heavy lift transport planning.
  • Previous experience in a related position in ports or with a heavy lift crane operator.
  • Previous experience in ship design would be considered.
  • Computer literate – including competency with AutoCAD or similar.
  • Thorough knowledge of international rules and regulations as they apply to cargo
  • Handling and stowage, especially ILO152 for lifting equipment.
  • Fluent in English language, written and oral.
