Job Description

A well-established maritime company is seeking to appoint an experienced Legal Counsel to support its business across legal, corporate secretarial, and insurance-related matters. Reporting directly to the CEO, this is a key position for a commercially minded legal professional who is able to work independently and provide practical legal guidance in a dynamic shipping environment.

The successful candidate will play a broad in-house legal role, partnering closely with internal stakeholders on day-to-day contractual, corporate, and claims matters. This opportunity is ideal for a lawyer with strong marine or shipping industry exposure who is comfortable operating as a trusted advisor to senior management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and support to senior management and internal stakeholders on a range of business and operational matters.
  • Draft, review, amend, and negotiate commercial contracts and other legal documentation.
  • Advise stakeholders on contractual terms, legal implications, and risk considerations.
  • Handle corporate secretarial matters and support the company’s governance and compliance requirements.
  • Manage insurance-related matters, including renewals, policy documentation, and claims handling.
  • Liaise with P&I Clubs, H&M insurers, claims adjusters, and other external parties in relation to claims and insurance matters.
  • Coordinate with internal departments during incidents or claims and support the overall claims management process.
  • Work with external legal counsel where required on disputes, claims, or specialised legal matters.
  • Support the business with practical, commercially sound legal solutions while protecting the company’s interests.

Requirements

  • Law degree from a recognised university.
  • At least 5 years of relevant legal experience, preferably gained in-house or within a law firm handling shipping or marine matters.
  • Prior experience in the marine or shipping industry is essential.
  • Good understanding of contract drafting, review, and negotiation.
  • Exposure to corporate secretarial responsibilities and insurance or claims matters will be highly advantageous.
  • Familiarity with P&I, H&M, and related maritime claims processes is preferred.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Able to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and operate confidently in a lean environment.

Ideal Profile

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on legal professional with solid shipping industry knowledge and the ability to balance legal risk with commercial practicality. He or she should be comfortable engaging directly with senior leadership, internal stakeholders, insurers, and external counsel, while managing a wide variety of legal and insurance matters with minimal supervision.

This is an excellent opportunity for a capable legal professional who is looking to take on a broad and visible role within a reputable maritime organization.
