Job Description

Market Analysis & Strategy:

  • Conduct in-depth analysis of physical freight markets, including supply/demand dynamics, vessel availability, commodity flows, and geopolitical factors.

  • Monitor and analyze the Freight Forward Agreement (FFA) market, identifying arbitrage opportunities between physical and paper markets.

  • Develop and execute high-conviction trading strategies based on fundamental and technical analysis.

Trading & Execution:

  • Execute physical vessel charters (as Principal or Broker) or FFA trades, managing the entire deal lifecycle from initiation to completion.

  • Negotiate terms with counterparts, including charterers, owners, and brokers, to secure profitable fixtures.

  • Proactively build and maintain a strong network of contacts within the shipping and commodity trading communities.

  • Price risk and structure trades to optimize returns while managing exposure.

Risk Management:

  • Manage a trading book, adhering strictly to company risk mandates and position limits.

  • Monitor and report on market exposure, P&L, and mark-to-market valuations on a daily basis.

  • Hedge physical exposure using FFAs or other derivative instruments as appropriate.

Stakeholder Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the Operations team to ensure smooth and efficient post-fixture execution, minimizing potential disputes.

  • Liaise with the Research and Analytics team to vet ideas and challenge assumptions.

  • Provide clear and concise market commentary and trade ideas to senior management.

Business Development:

  • Identify and develop new trading opportunities and counterparty relationships.

  • Continuously seek to expand the company’s footprint in existing or new market segments.

Qualifications & Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Maritime Studies, Business, or a related field. An MBA or MSc is a plus.

  • Minimum of [3-5] years of experience in a similar role as a Freight Trader, Physical Charterer, or FFA Trader within the shipping industry.

  • Proven and verifiable track record of generating P&L.

  • Deep understanding of physical shipping (charter parties, voyage calculations, laytime) and/or the FFA market.

  • Strong existing network of contacts within the relevant shipping sector (e.g., dry bulk, tanker, container)
